Electricity rates going up

Advertiser Staff

February residential electricity rates will rise for customers of Hawaiian Electric Co. and its sister subsidiaries because of higher fuel costs.

Hawaiian Electric Co. said the typical 600-kilowatt-hour bill for O'ahu residential customers will rise to $148.23 from $145 in January.

The effective rate for electricity in Honolulu is 23.60 cents per kilowatt hour, up from 22.66 cents last month.

Elsewhere in the state:

• Maui customers will see rates go up to 28.39 cents from 28.10 cents in January. The typical Maui bill will be $178.39.

• Big Island residential rates will rise to 34 cents from the 33.16 cents that was charged per kilowatt hour last month. The typical bill will be $215.06.

Hawaiian Electric noted the rate for O'ahu is still below the 32.5 cents per kilowatt hour paid in September 2008, when the effects of record-high oil prices were being felt.
