Big Isle seeks to ban riding in truck beds

HILO, Hawai'i — The Hawai'i County Council will take up a resolution that calls on next year's Legislature to outlaw riding in the bed of pickup trucks.
Councilman Kelly Greenwell, who introduced the resolution, said it's "stupid" to require the use of seat belts in a truck cab, but not require protection for adults and teens in the cargo area.
The measure seeks the support of Hawai'i's three other counties.
The Big Island has already outlawed driving while using a handheld cell phone.
