WAIPAHU — Kahana Neal pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts and Royce Murai had a triple with two RBIs yesterday to help Pearl City hold off Moanalua, 4-1, in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association baseball quarterfinals at Hans L'Orange Park.

The OIA Red Conference Western Division champion Chargers improved to 13-0 in league play and will face West No. 4 seed Mililani (9-5) in today's semifinals at Patsy Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park.

First pitch will take place 30 minutes after the 4 p.m. semifinal between East champ Kailua (11-2) and West runner-up Campbell (9-4).

Both games will be televised live statewide on OC16.

Pearl City is the two-time defending OIA champion, but drew a tough matchup yesterday in Moanalua, which has several returnees from last year's team which reached the state semifinals.

Nā Menehune took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning after Austin Inabata led off with a single, advanced to second on Miles Higa's sacrifice bunt and scored on Jordan DePonte's double.

But the Chargers answered in the bottom of the third when Reid Ramos led off with a double, Jonathan Kealoha followed with a single and Murai slammed a two-run double into the alley in right-center field.

Pearl City made it 4-1 in the sixth after Chace Numata's RBI double and Austin Bali's run-scoring single.

Moanalua (8-6) made it interesting in the seventh, after Ryan Cortez singled up the middle with two outs and Bronson Shim reached on an error, moving Cortez to third.

That brought cleanup hitter Kamalu Kamoku — a 6-foot-1, 225-pound junior who hit a two-run homer in Wednesday's first-round victory over Kapolei — to the plate.

But Neal got Kamoku to hit an 0-1 pitch to second base for a force play.

"I had to be careful because he's a good hitter," said Neal, a right-handed senior. "But we had a base open, so if anything I just had to make sure I didn't give him anything he could drive."

Neal allowed eight hits but none of them was consecutive, and he ended each of the first four innings with strikeouts.

"We didn't come up with enough hits when we needed them," Nā Menehune coach Scott Yamada said.

Jared Matsumoto homered and tripled, Byson Dymond went 3 for 4, and Kory Sasaoka, Ryan Mcmonigle and Alika Ramseyer-Ho each had two hits as the host Surfriders pounded the Cougars. Kailua scored six in the first, three in the second and five in the third to take a 14-2 lead.

The visiting Trojans scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning, then held off the Rough Riders, who rallied for two runs in their half of the inning at Stevenson Intermediate Field. Chad Bolibol went 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Shanztyn Agbayani-Shibao and Troy Yoshizawa each drove in a run for Mililani.
