Rainbow baseball team falls to Louisiana Tech, 9-5

Freshman Trevor Petersen was backed by a 14-hit attack to help Louisiana Tech beat Hawai'i. 9-5, today to even the Western Athletic Conference series at 1 at J.C. Love Field in Ruston, La.
Petersen (5-4) pitched a complete game, allowing five runs (four earned), eight hits and a walk with four strikeouts for the Bulldogs ( 20-17 overall, 5-5 WAC).
Sam Spangler (2-6) allowed four runs in four-plus inning for the Rainbows (20-19, 3-7).
Jeffrey Van Doornum and David Freitas homered for UH.
The Bulldogs jumped to a 1-0 lead in the second, when Clint Ewing doubled, took third when Will Alvis flied out to deep center and scored on Justin Gordey's sacrifice fly to right.
The Rainbows tied it in the top of the third when Sean Monplaisir doubled and scored on Chase Koissians's single.
Tech regained the lead in the bottom of the third. Alex Williams singled, took third on Devon Dageford's double and scored on Joey Ford's sacrifice fly to right that sent Dageford to third. A wild pitch scored Dageford to make it 3-1.
Hawai'i pulled to 3-2 in the top of the fourth. Van Doornum led off with a single, took second on a wild pitch, went to third when Collin Bennett grounded out to second and scored on Greg Garcia's sacrifice fly to right.
The Bulldogs added a run in the bottom of the fifth. Mark Threlkeld led off with a single and scored on Williams' double. Spangler was pulled for Jesse Moore, who struck out Dageford. Ford reached on shortstop Garcia's error, as Williams held second. Ewing was robbed of a hit on a leaping catch by center fielder Bennett, who doubled the runner off first to end the inning.
Hawai'i used its power to pull to 4-3 when the hot-hitting Van Doornum hit a two out, solo home run. It was his third in two games and seventh of the season.
Tech increased its lead in the sixth. Alvis led off with a walk and took second on pinch hitter Clint Stubbs' bloop bunt single and scored on Taylor Terrasas' double. Moore was pulled for Blair Walters, who gave up an RBI single to Kyle Rolliard to make it 6-3.
The Bulldogs cushioned their lead in the seventh with a two-run home run by Alvis in the bottom of the seventh to make it 8-3.
Stubbs and Terrasas each singled and Rolliard was hit by a pitch to load the bases, ending Walters' day. Nate Klein came in and walked Threlkeld to force in a run to make it 9-3.
Freitas' solo home run in the eighth pulled UH to 9-4.
Hawai'i got an unearned run in the ninth on two errors to pull to 9-5.
