Guard Jeramy Lay will not return to the University of Hawaii basketball team for the upcoming season, the school announced.
Lay will transfer to a school yet to be determined, UH said.
"Jeremy and I were able to sit down and talk about his future and the future of the program," said UH coach Gib Arnold in a release. "We agreed it was in everybody's best interest that Jeremy move on and continue his career at another school. We'll continue to work with him on the basketball floor and he'll continue to attend classes to work towards his degree. We're going to help him any way we can. We appreciate his contributions to the program and wish him the best."
Lay, a junior college transfer, played in 23 games for UH until missing the final seven games of the season with a hernia.
He was the team's fourth-leading scorer (8.4 ppg) and was third on the team in assists (54), 3-pointers made (28) and steals (17).
He was named to the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic all-tournament team during the season's opening weekend and exploded for 26 points in the team's loss to New Mexico on Nov 27. He also had a streak of 25 consecutive free throws made early in the season, just three shy of the school record.
"I enjoyed my time here in Hawaii," Lay said, according to the UH statement. "Things didn't turn out exactly how I'd hoped, but I'm proud of the effort I gave and I look forward to new opportunities on the basketball court."
