The University of Hawaii men's basketball team is not going to win every recruiting battle.

The Rainbow Warriors lost one today when California point guard Keith Shamburger said he would sign with San Jose State.

Keith Shamburger, a 6-foot point guard at Junipero Serra High in Gardena, Calif., said he chose the Spartans over the 'Bows for family reasons.

"I have a nephew who is 1 and I'm like a father figure to him so I wanted to stay in California and be close to my family," he said.

Shamburger visited Hawai'i last weekend, and said his final two choices were Hawai'i and San Jose State.

"Everything on the trip (to Hawai'i) went well," he said. "It's nothing against Hawai'i. It basically came down to my family."

Shamburger averaged 21.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.3 steals per game as a senior while leading Serra High to the California Division III state championship.

Hawai'i and San Jose State are both members of the Western Athletic Conference, so Shamburger and the Spartans will face the 'Bows at least twice per season.

"I made friends out there in Hawai'i and I really like the coaches," Shamburger said. "At least I get to see them a couple times a year."
