SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Mike Singletary called Ted Ginn Jr. yesterday to personally welcome him to the San Francisco 49ers.

The fastest draft bust in Miami Dolphins' history is bound for the Bay Area — filling one of the Niners' biggest offseason needs in the process, and giving Ginn a well-timed fresh start across the country in the NFC West.

"We added a talented player that fit a need," Singletary said. "He's a bundle of potential and his upside is off the charts. This guy can fly."

Ginn, a receiver and quality return man, was traded to the 49ers yesterday for a fifth-round pick — the 145th overall selection. The Dolphins had him on the block even before they acquired Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall on Wednesday from the Denver Broncos.

While Ginn wasn't sure he was on his way out when Miami got Marshall, he had a pretty good idea.

"If you know the game and you know the business, you are ready for anything," he said on a conference call. "I'm just going to come into the 49ers and show 'em what I got."

Dolphins fans began booing Ginn the day he was drafted and never stopped. Taken with the ninth overall pick in 2007, he made only five touchdown catches in three seasons while averaging 13.0 yards per reception.

Ginn was more successful on special teams, scoring on kickoff returns of 100 and 101 yards in the same quarter of a game against the New York Jets last season. He became the first player with two kickoff returns of at least 100 yards in the same game.

SEAHAWKS

SIGN PAIR OF WRS NAMED WILLIAMS

The Seattle Seahawks have signed wide receivers Mike Williams and Reggie Williams, both former first-round draft picks by other teams who then flopped.

The team signed the two, big wide receivers to free-agent contracts yesterday. Both had three-day tryouts in minicamp this week.

Mike Williams is the former No. 10 overall draft choice of the Detroit Lions who ballooned to 270 pounds and has been out of the league for two years. He played for new Seahawks coach Pete Carroll at Southern California through 2003.

Reggie Williams is a former ninth overall pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars from the University of Washington who is serving two years of probation from a cocaine possession charge. He's been out of the league for a year.

BUCCANEERS

WR STOVALL SIGNS TENDER TO STAY

Restricted free agent receiver Maurice Stovall has signed a one-year tender to remain with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Stovall entered the NFL as a third-round draft selection in 2006. In four seasons, he has 44 receptions for 579 yards and two touchdowns. He's made 33 special teams tackles in 44 career games.

Stovall signed the tender offer yesterday.

COWBOYS

RECEIVER HURD BACK FOR 5TH SEASON

Receiver Sam Hurd signed his contract offer yesterday, bringing him back for a fifth season.

Hurd went into last season battling Miles Austin for a role as the team's third receiver, then wound up back in the pack and continuing his role as a special-teams ace. Over 50 career games, he has 31 catches for 510 yards and two touchdowns, and 51 tackles on special teams.

Hurd made the team in 2006 as an undrafted rookie from Northern Illinois. A restricted free agent, the Cowboys put a second-round tender on him, which means he'll make $1.8 million this season.

The Cowboys have yet to sign two restricted free agents: Austin and safety Gerald Sensabaugh. They can no longer sign with other teams, but are likely hoping to work out more thana one-year deal. Austinhas been offered almost$3.2 million, Sensabaugh just over $1.8 million.

RAIDERS

LB HOWARD SIGNS FREE AGENT TENDER

The Oakland Raiders say linebacker Thomas Howard has signed his restricted free agent tender.

The announcement yesterday leaves cornerback Stanford Routt as the only restricted free agent who has not signed his contract tender with the team.

Howard was a second-round pick in 2006. He has started 64 of 66 games in his career. He has seven career interceptions with two being returned for touchdowns.

Howard's starting position this year is in jeopardy. Coach Tom Cable said Thursday that Kamerion Wimbley and Trevor Scott would start at outside linebacker.

Howard will receive $1.759 million if he makes the team.

REDSKINS

RE-SIGN DEFENSIVE LINEMAN GOLSTON

The Washington Redskins have re-signed defensive lineman Kedric Golston.

Golston was a restricted free agent this offseason. He was a sixth-round draft pick by the Redskins in 2006 and has played in 60 games with 30 starts in his four NFL seasons.

Last year, Golston started five games and had two sacks.
