Holy Trinity School in East Honolulu will close down at the end of the school year because of a shrinking enrollment and increases in the number of students needing financial aid.

The kindergarten through eighth grade campus has 70 students.

"We, over a period of years, have been experiencing declining enrollment, especially this year," said Father Gary Secor, pastor of Holy Trinity Church. In addition, "a significant number of students who are enrolled are coming from families that ... need a significant amount of financial help."

Secor said enrollment has dropped from about 90 in 2008.

The school will shut down on the last day of school June 7.

The news comes three weeks after Word of Life Academy in Kakaako announced it was shutting down because of the economic downturn.

That school, with 250 students, will close its doors June 4.
