PARIS, Ky. — Personal Ensign, who went unbeaten in 13 career starts before becoming one of the most successful broodmares in racing, has died. She was 26.
The family of late owner Ogden Phipps says Personal Ensign died of natural causes at Claiborne Farm on Thursday.
Trained by Shug McGaughey, Personal Ensign became a sensation during her brilliant career. She went a perfect 13-for-13 between 1986-88, with eight of her wins coming in Grade 1 races.
She captured the Eclipse Award as champion older female in 1988 when she capped her career by edging Kentucky Derby winner Winning Colors in a thrilling stretch duel in the Breeders' Cup Distaff.
Personal Ensign became one of the sport's top broodmares upon retirement. Notable offspring include Grade 1 winners Miner's Mark and Traditionally.
