CHARLESTON, S.C. — Three-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova is withdrawing from the Family Circle Cup.

Tournament officials announced on Thursday the world's 14th-ranked player continues to recover from the elbow injury that forced her to withdraw from the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami. Sharapova said the elbow isn't completely healed.

Sharapova first played in Charleston in 2003 as a 15-year-old qualifier. She also played in 2008, facing Serena Williams in a quarterfinal match.

The 23-year-old Russian won Wimbledon in 2004, the U.S. Open in 2006 and the Australian Open in 2008.

The clay court Family Circle Cup will be played from April 12-18 at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island.
