Berg, Bown help U.S. prevail

The U.S. women's national volleyball team, with Hawai'i's Lindsey Berg and Heather Bown in the starting lineup, dominated Costa Rica, 25-7, 25-10, 25-13, yesterday to conclude pool play in the NORCECA Continental Championship at Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
Team USA, which finished second in the Pool B with a 2-1 record, plays Canada tonight in a quarterfinal match. Cuba, which beat Team USA in five sets Wednesday, topped the pool with a 3-0 record.
Berg, a Punahou School graduate, started at setter and recorded a team-high eight digs and two aces. Bown, a University of Hawai'i alum, started at middle blocker and contributed one block.
Cynthia Barboza scored 11 kills on 17 errorless attacks to go with an ace in leading the U.S. offense.
"We are ready to face Canada," U.S. head coach Hugh McCutcheon said in a story on the USA Volleyball Web site. "But it was not a surprise that we lost to Cuba in our pool. Now we are ready to play as many matches as we can."
Bown scored six points and Berg added two points in Wednesday's 19-25, 16-25, 25-16, 28-26, 15-10 loss to Cuba.
The NORCECA Continental Championship concludes Sunday with the winner qualifying for the 2009 FIVB Grand Champions Cup in Japan, Nov. 10 to 15. Each of the four continental champions earns a spot into the Cup, along with host Japan and one wild card team.

Kylee Nawahine had 11 kills as host Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Chaminade, 25-18, 25-23, 26-24, last night in a Pacific West Conference match at Cannon Activities Center.
Lacey Laycock added 29 assists and Losaline Faka'osi 12 digs for the Seasiders (4-7, 1-1). Chauntelle Maduli had 13 kills, Whitney Viveiros 19 digs and Tanya Alvino 34 assists for the Silverswords (1-11, 0-3).
SURFING
PATACCHIA ADVANCES
Fred Patacchia Jr. of O'ahu's North Shore advanced to the third round of the Quiksilver Pro France men's surfing contest yesterday.
Patacchia defeated Brazil's Jihad Khodr in the second round, 9.84-6.13.
Kekoa Bacalso of Mililani was eliminated in the second round.
Dustin Barca of Kaua'i advanced to the third round earlier in the week. Another Kaua'i surfer, Roy Powers, has yet to complete his third round heat.
The contest is the seventh of 10 stops on the 2009 ASP World Tour.

HAWAI'I MISSES CUT
Hawai'i tumbled from a tie for 18th to 34th and missed the cut yesterday in the eighth USGA Men's State Team Championship at St. Albans, Mo.
Ryan Perez shot a 5-over-par 76 and David Saka a 78 as Hawai'i finished with a two-day total of 14-over 298. Lorens Chan's 79 did not count in Hawai'i's score. Perez finished at 148, Chan at 151 and Saka at 152.
Pennsylvania, at 7-under 277, takes a four-stroke lead over Illinois and Rhode Island into today's final round.
South Carolina's Mark Anderson, who shot 71 for a 6-under 136, has a one-stroke lead in individual competition.
