Hayashi's 67 leads major

Kevin Hayashi of Hilo Municipal fired an opening 3-under-par 67 for a one-shot lead in the Aloha PGA Professional Championship and Stroke Play Championship yesterday at the Honolulu Country Club.

John Hearn of KMR School of Golf is second after shooting 68.

This is the third major on the Aloha Section PGA calendar. The winner gets a spot in January's Sony Open in Hawai'i and the top two finishers represent the section at the 43rd PGA Professional National Championship next year in French Lick, Ind.

Also, Hilo Municipal's Lance Taketa shot 5-under 65 yesterday to lead the Senior PGA Professional Championship at the Honolulu Country Club.

Taketa, the reigning Senior Player of the Year, holds a four-shot lead over Dugal Milne (69) of Makena and Dave Chin (69) of Navy Marine.

The top three qualifiers represent the section at the Senior PGA Professional National Championship next month in Florida.

This year's purse is $18,500, with the winner getting $3,000. The seniors play for $3,300 with the winner getting $1,000. Both champions receive roundtrip tickets from Continental Airlines.

HPU BLANKS BYUH

Chance Bukoski scored three goals and Isaiah Guth added one as Hawai'i Pacific defeated Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 4-0, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference men's soccer match at La'ie.

Bukoski scored in the 46th, 71st and 89th minutes. Guth scored in the 83rd minute.

Nathan Scott added two assists for the Sea Warriors (4-1 overall, 1-1 PacWest) against the Seasiders (2-3, 1-1).

WOMEN'S SOCCER

HPU DEFEATS BYUH

Amber Fuller's go-ahead goal in the 48th minute helped Hawai'i Pacific top Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 2-1, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference women's soccer match at La'ie.

Brenna Rhoades' goal in the 36th minute tied the match after Dyanne Anderson's goal off an assist by Liana Gualdarama in the 31st minute put HPU ahead, 1-0.

The Sea Warriors improved to 3-2-1 overall, 1-1 PacWest. The Seasiders dropped to 3-1, 1-1.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

VULCANS TO NO. 22

The Hawai'i-Hilo women's volleyball team moved up three spots to No. 22 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II poll.

UH-Hilo (12-0, 2-0 PacWest), which is spending its second consecutive week in the AVCA poll, plays a league match at Dominican (Calif.) on Saturday.

FREE LESSONS OCT. 7

The Hawaiian Isles Tennis Foundation will conduct Hit For Health, Oct. 7, from 1 to 2 p.m., at The Boys & Girls Club of Hawai'i 'Ewa Beach Clubhouse.

The free introductory tennis lesson is available to juniors between the ages of 7 and 12. It will be conducted by USPTA pro D Conroy, assistants and volunteers. Emphasis will be on fun and movement while working on groundstrokes, volleys and overheads.
