In a crime called "especially heinous," a Hilo grand jury has indicted a Wainaku man accused of assaulting, raping and drowning his girlfriend's 5-year-old daughter.
Javieanne Win, who was a first-grader at Chiefess Kapi'olani Elementary School, was to be laid to rest in services yesterday on the Big Island.
The indictment will move the case of Anthony Serges Poulin from South Hilo District Court to Hilo Circuit Court.
Poulin, 30, is charged with second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree sex assault, and abuse of a family household member in the Sept. 6 drowning death of Javieanne Win.
He had been scheduled to return to District Court on Oct. 13 after Judge Barbara Takase granted a motion filed by Poulin's court-appointed attorney, Stanton Oshiro, for a psychiatric evaluation of Poulin by three doctors.
Poulin is in custody at Hawai'i Community Correctional Center on $1 million bail.
The indictment, filed Wednesday, asks for an extended sentence for Poulin, which would mean a life sentence with the possibility of parole. The document alleges "the murder was especially heinous, atrocious or cruel, manifesting exceptional depravity. ..."
