State cites Chevron Hawaii Refinery
HONOLULU — The Clean Water Branch of the state Department of Health says it has cited the Chevron Hawaii Refinery on Oahu for water-quality violations.
Officials say the refinery discharged a red-colored effluent of unknown composition from its foul water treatment plant to the ocean over a five-day period in April.
They say the violation was discovered April 27 during an inspection of the facility. Warning signs were posted at nearby coastal areas.
The officials say a penalty of $43,500 is being sought.
Chevron may request a hearing if it contests the case.
