Sakamoto's fishing event has scholarships on line

The first Mike Sakamoto Memorial Scholarship Fishing Tournament, an event held in the memory of a fishing icon and to raise scholarship money, will be held Sept. 18 to 20 on O'ahu's shorelines.
The tournament weigh-in will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 20 at Pier 38 Domestic Fishing Village.
The Mike Sakamoto Memorial Scholarship fund was developed by the Pacific Islands Fisheries Group to honor the legacy of Sakamoto, who passed away in January 2009.
Sakamoto was best known as host/producer of the Fishing Tales television program. The scholarship is intended to carry on Mike Sakamoto's work and philosophy to improve Hawai'i's ocean resources.

Selected students will receive $10,000 in scholarship funds. Scholarship applications will begin in October 2009 and scholarship funds will be awarded for the spring 2010 semester.
ADVANCED VOLLEYBALL SKILLS CLINIC FOR GIRLS
Olympian Robyn Ah Mow-Santos and former All-American Tanya Fuamatu Anderson will hold an advanced skills volleyball clinic for girls ages 12-17.
The clinics will be held Sept. 14 to Nov. 2 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Word of Life Gym.
The clinic will focus on advanced passing, defense, setting and blocking skills and incorporates team concepts and strategy. It will be limited to 25 participants.
Registration is $600 and will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.
NOT TOO LATE TO ENTER 2009 FREEDOM WALK
More than 1,500 will participate today in the 2009 Freedom Walk, memorializing the events of 9/11.
The mile-and-a-half walk will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. The event is open to the public and takes place at the Dept. of the Navy's ball field by Valkenburg and Main Street.
More than 1,300 students and faculty from the Holy Family Catholic Academy and Chester Nimitz Elementary School will participate.
Other participants include the Honolulu Airport's TSA personnel, Fire Department, Police Department, VFW and other veterans, Operation Homefront volunteers and other members of the community.
