Honolulu firefighters battled two wildfires yesterday, one in Wai'anae and the other in the Waiawa Ridge area, where several brushfires have been reported in recent days.

At about 12:50 p.m. yesterday, a fire was reported near Ala Hema and Ala 'Akau streets in Wai'anae, near Kamaile Elementary and Wai'anae Intermediate schools. About 50 firefighters and the Honolulu Fire Department's Air One helicopter battled the blaze and had it contain- ed at 8:30 p.m., said Capt. Terry Seelig, HFD spokesman.

The fire burned about 100 acres and firefighters planned to monitor hotspots overnight and respond to flareups that may occur, Seelig said. No property was damaged and there were no reports of injuries.

At about 11 a.m., firefighters returned to the Waiawa Ridge area in Central O'ahu to fight a flareup of an earlier fire. The fire was near H-2 Freeway and Honolulu police closed two lanes in the north-bound direction for about four hours as a precaution.

Seelig said the fire was contained at about 4 p.m. after it burned about 5 acres. There were no reports of damage or injuries.

Seelig said the cause of both fires is under investigation.
