Entertainer Bumatai sentenced in tax case

Local comedian Andy Bumatai was fined $2,500 and ordered to perform 300 hours of community service after pleading guilty to failing to pay his annual general excise taxes.
Bumatai pleaded guilty to five counts of willful failure to file his annual returns for 2002 through 2006, according to the state Department of Taxation. The charges were misdemeanors and Bumatai could have been sentenced to a year in prison and fined up to $25,000 on each count.
But District Judge Faye Koyanagi granted Bumatai’s request for a deferral of his plea, meaning his record could be wiped clean if he stays out of trouble for a year.
