Irish's Te'o makes nice impression in debut

Notre Dame freshman linebacker Manti Te'o, a 2009 Punahou graduate from La'ie, made his long-awaited debut in the Fighting Irish's 35-0 season-opening win over Western Athletic Conference member Nevada on Saturday in South Bend, Ind.
Te'o, who is 6 feet 2 and 244 pounds, is listed as the backup to starting weakside linebacker Brian Smith. He is the only freshman on Notre Dame's two-deep depth chart on offense or defense.
He finished with two tackles against the Wolf Pack. Te'o tackled quarterback Colin Kaepernick, the reigning WAC Offensive Player of the Year, after an 11-yard gain on a third down early in the second quarter and he stopped running back Vai Taua after a 4-yard gain on first down in the third quarter.
Also, Nevada redshirt junior linebacker Jared Silva-Purcell, a 2006 Saint Louis graduate from Honolulu, had one solo tackle.
Notre Dame visits Michigan Saturday.
MORE FOOTBALL
Oregon junior quarterback Jeremiah Masoli (Saint Louis '06) completed 14 of 27 passes for 121 yards in a 19-8 loss at Boise State Thursday. Masoli had the Ducks' lone touchdown, a 5-yard run in the third quarter.
Oregon State junior safety Suaesi Tuimaunei (Kahuku '06 of La'ie) tied for a team-high seven tackles in Saturday's 34-7 win over Portland State. Sophomore linebacker David Pa'aluhi (Wai'anae '07) had five tackles and redshirt freshman defensive tackle Castro Masaniai (Waipahu '07) recorded three tackles, including a sack. Sophomore defensive back Brandon Hardin (Kamehameha '07 of Honolulu) and freshman defensive end Kevin Unga (Kahuku '07) added two tackles apiece.
Utah senior linebacker Kepa Gaison (Kamehameha '05 of Kane'ohe) had four tackles and broke up a pass in Thursday's 35-17 win over Utah State. Junior defensive end Nai Fotu (Kahuku '07 of La'ie) added a pair of tackles, including a sack, and forced a fumble for the Utes.
California senior defensive lineman Tyson Alualu (Saint Louis '05 of Honolulu) had three tackles, broke up two passes, forced a fumble and was in on a sack in Saturday's 52-13 win over Maryland.
Idaho junior linebacker JoJo Dickson (Baldwin '07 of Wailuku) had a game-high 11 tackles in a 21-6 win at New Mexico State Saturday. Sophomore linebacker Robert Siavi'i (Leilehua '08 of Wahiawa) added four tackles for the Vandals and NMSU junior defensive end Kawika Shook (Kamehameha '06 of Kapolei) had five tackles.
Arizona State senior wide receiver Brian Matsumoto (Punahou '05 of Honolulu) caught a 16-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter of Saturday's 50-3 win over Idaho State.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Washington senior libero Tamari Miyashiro (Kalani '05 of Kane'ohe) had a match-high 17 digs with two aces in a 3-0 win over Portland State Saturday. The Huskies, who remained at No. 3 in this week's AVCA Top 25 poll, swept all three of their opponents to capture the Northwest Challenge championship in Portland, Ore.
Oregon State senior setter Camilla Ah-Hoy (Kahuku '06 of La'ie) had 33 assists and 11 digs in a sweep of Cal State Fullerton Monday. Ah-Hoy had 48 assists and 10 digs in a 3-1 loss to Wisconsin Sunday.
St. John's (N.Y.) freshman libero Ashley Asing (Moanalua '08 of 'Ewa Beach) had a match-high 21 digs in a 3-1 win over Fordham Saturday. Junior defensive specialist Kayla Motoyama (Roosevelt '07 of Honolulu) had 11 digs for the Red Storm.
Pacific (Calif.) sophomore outside hitter Rebekah Torres (Kamehameha '08 of Wahiawa) had seven kills, eight digs, three block assists and two aces in a 3-0 sweep of San Jose State Friday. Senior defensive specialist Dancyne Kama (Kamehameha-Hawai'i '06 of Hilo) had 10 digs for the Tigers.
St. Mary's (Calif.) sophomore outside hitter Chanteal Satele (Word of Life '08 of Mililani) tied for a match-high 15 kills and hit .433 in a 3-1 win over San Diego State Monday. Junior setter Kapua Kamana'o ('Iolani '07 of Honolulu) recorded 48 assists and senior middle blocker Megan Burton ('Iolani '06 of Kapolei) added eight kills for the Gaels.
Boston College sophomore outside hitter Jordan Meredith (Kamehameha '08 of Honolulu) had 11 kills, five digs, two aces and was in on four blocks in a 3-1 win over St. John's Friday. Sophomore libero Brennan Clark (University High '08 of Mililani) collected 50 digs in the Eagles' three weekend victories, including 16 against the Red Storm.
Hofstra freshman libero/outside hitter Kylee Maneja (Sacred Hearts '09 of Kapolei) had a team-high 15 digs in a 3-1 loss to Seton Hall Saturday. Freshman libero Maile Scarpino ('Iolani '09 of Kailua) added 12 digs, three assists and two aces for the Pride.
Nevada junior outside hitter Kylie Harrington (St. Francis '07 of Honolulu) put away a match-high 21 kills with 15 digs and three aces in a 3-2 win over Houston Saturday. Sophomore setter Tatiana Santiago (Kamehameha '08 of Kahuku) added 25 assists with nine digs for the Wolf Pack.
San Jose State freshman outside hitter Alex Akana (Kamehameha '09 of Kailua) had a team-high 10 kills and hit .429 in a 3-0 loss to Stanford Saturday. Freshman setter Caitlin Andrade (Kamehameha '09 of Kailua) recorded 20 assists, six digs and four kills, and senior libero Kristal Tsukano (Kamehameha '06 of Honolulu) added five digs for the Spartans.
Colgate (N.Y.) junior outside hitter Logan Keala (Kamehameha '07 of Kane'ohe) tied for a team-high nine kills with nine digs in a 3-0 loss to Toledo Saturday. Keala had eight kills, 12 digs and five aces in a 3-2 loss to Harvard Friday.
Pittsburgh junior defensive specialist Melanie Feldman (Punahou '07 of Honolulu) had nine digs and an ace in a 3-0 sweep of Buffalo Saturday.
Southern Utah junior outside hitter Jazmine Ma'afala (McKinley '07 of 'Ewa Beach) tied for a match-high with 16 kills and added 10 digs and three aces in a 3-2 loss to Air Force Saturday. Freshman libero Courtney Lelepali (Punahou '09 of Wai'anae) recorded a team-high 16 digs for the Thunderbirds.
Concordia (Ore.) sophomore setter Skyler Kamaka (Kamehameha '08 of Kane'ohe) was named Setter of the Week by the Cascade Collegiate Conference Monday after she collected 161 assists and 32 digs in four matches last weekend, including a 55-assist match in Sunday's 3-2 loss to Southern Oregon.
Central Washington junior libero Brandie Vea (Kalani '07 of Honolulu) recorded 43 digs in a 3-1 win over Brigham Young-Hawai'i Friday. It was the second-highest total in school history, only behind Vea's 50-dig performance against Sonoma State last season. She averaged a tournament-best 6.82 digs per set in four wins over the weekend.
Puget Sound senior libero Leigh Sumida ('Iolani '06 of Kane'ohe) recorded 19 digs and four aces in a 3-1 win over St. Benedict, and had a match-high 24 digs and three aces in a 3-2 win over Pacific Lutheran Saturday.
Lewis & Clark (Ore.) freshman setter Leia Matsunaga (Kamehameha '09 of Kane'ohe) had 26 assists and 17 digs in a 3-0 sweep of Whittier (Calif.) Saturday. Senior outside hitter Jessamy Holland (Punahou '04 of Honolulu) added seven digs and three kills for the Pioneers.
Linfield (Wash.) sophomore outside hitter Samantha Lau (St. Francis '08 of Honolulu) had 16 digs in a 3-0 sweep of Wartburg Sunday. Lau had 11 digs in a sweep of Willamette Saturday.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
St. Mary's (Calif.) senior forward Ashley Nied (Punahou '06 of Kailua) assisted on both goals in a 2-1 win over Texas Friday. Nied's first assist came in the 58th minute and put the Gaels ahead 1-0. She also assisted on the game-winner in the 83rd minute.
Loyola Marymount sophomore midfielder Erin Rementer (Punahou '08 of Honolulu) scored in the 106th minute of Friday's 1-0, double-overtime win over Vermont.
Alabama-Birmingham junior defender Marie Yempuku (Kamehameha '07 of Honolulu) was named Conference USA co-Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Blazers to the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic title with wins over Hawai'i and Pacific. Yempuku scored in the 70th minute of Sunday's win over the Tigers and was named MVP of the tournament.
CROSS COUNTRY
Kevin Acacio (Waipahu '07) of Illinois Tech finished 91st with a 6-kilometer time of 21:51 at Friday's Early Bird Invitational at Elmhurst, Ill.
Matt Nakamoto (Hawai'i Baptist '09 of Honolulu) of Northern Colorado placed 39th with a 6.8-kilometer time of 24:59.3 at Friday's Wyoming Invitational. Northern Colorado finished fourth with 113 points. The race was delayed for an hour due to a late evening lightning storm.
Dawson Vorderbruegge (Kaiser '08 of Honolulu) of Cal State Stanislaus finished third at Saturday's Cal State Monterey Bay Invitational with a 4-mile time of 22:20. He helped the Warriors finish second in the team standings with 43 points.
MEN'S WATER POLO
Loyola Marymount redshirt junior driver Andrew Aki (Punahou '06 of Honolulu) scored three goals in a 15-1 win over Pomona-Pitzer and added two more in a 12-5 win over Air Force.
