The Detroit Lions waived three players yesterday, including defensive end Ikaika Alama-Francis, a former University of Hawai'i standout.

Alama-Francis, who was an All-State basketball player at Kalaheo High, was drafted by Detroit in the second round in 2007.

The Lions also cut receiver Adam Jennings and cornerback Cletis Gordon.

In other news regarding players with Hawai'i ties, the Buffalo Bills signed wide receiver C.J. Hawthorne to their practice squad yesterday and the Chicago Bears signed center Donovan Raiola to their practice squad. Both had been released a day earlier.

Hawthorne, a former UH player, also was placed on the Bills' practice squad last season after signing as an undrafted free agent.

Raiola, a Kamehameha Schools alum, signed during training camp. He has spent time with the Rams, Steelers, Seahawks and Cardinals.

ELSEWHERE

SAINTS: New Orleans added quarterback Chase Daniel to its practice squad yesterday. Daniel, an undrafted rookie from Missouri, spent training camp with Washington pushing former UH star Colt Brennan for the third quarterback spot.

COWBOYS: Reality TV show winner Jesse Holley still has a part with Dallas — on the practice squad. Holley, a wide receiver, won Michael Irvin's reality TV show, which gave him the final spot on the training camp roster. He returned a punt 82 yards for a touchdown to give Dallas a win over Minnesota in the final preseason game.

BEARS: Chicago signed former Northwestern quarterback Brett Basanez to its practice squad. Basanez, the third-string quarterback during the preseason, could be promoted if the Bears need him in an emergency.

COLTS: Former Michigan running back Mike Hart was signed to Indianapolis' practice squad. The Colts also claimed linebacker Cody Glenn off waivers. Glenn was Washington's fifth-round draft pick in April.

VIKINGS: Minnesota signed quarterback John David Booty to its practice squad. Booty was the team's third-string quarterback last season, but he lost out on a spot on the active roster when the Vikings signed Brett Favre to be the starter.

STEELERS: Isaac Redman, whose goal-line running made him the surprise standout of Pittsburgh's training camp, joined the team's practice squad after clearing waivers. Redman, a non-drafted running back from Bowie State, scored three of the Steelers' five rushing touchdowns and was their leading rusher during the preseason.
