Huge Moloka'i fire contained
Brushfire halts H-2 traffic |
An 8,000-acre Moloka'i brushfire that has been burning since Aug. 29 was fully contained as of yesterday afternoon, according to Gen Iinuma, Maui County Civil Defense director.
He said firefighters from Maui and personnel from the National Park Service and the Department of Land and Natural Resources will start leaving today, and "remaining hot spots" will be monitored by Moloka'i firefighters.
The only property damage was to a garage, and the only injury was a firefighter, treated for smoke inhalation.
Given the magnitude and duration of the fire, Iinuma said, "We were very fortunate, and that is testimony to the efforts of the personnel involved." The cause of the fire is under investigation.
