Injured hiker airlifted from Hanakapi'ai Beach
HANAKAPI'AI – The Princeville resident who sustained nonlife-threatening injuries while hiking near Hanakapi'ai Falls yesterday and five members of the Kaua'i Fire Department who went to rescue him were airlifted from Hanakapi'ai Beach this morning after spending the night in Hanakapi'ai Valley.
A spokesperson for Wilcox Hospital said the injured hiker is in fair condition.
The three rescue specialists and two firefighters that were part of the rescue mission are all in good condition.
According to fire officials, plans to have the Coast Guard provide air assistance yesterday had to be changed due to windy conditions in Hanakapi'ai Valley, resulting in the injured hiker and his rescuers having to remain in the valley overnight.
The rescue operation resumed today at around 6:30 a.m. with Jack Harter Helicopters providing airlift services. By 8 a.m., the mission was completed.
