Four more people have died from swine flu, bringing the total such deaths in Hawaii to 10, the state Department of Health said today.
One of the deaths is a 5-year-old — the first death of a child here, said Janice Okubo, DOH spokeswoman.
The others who died were described as two adults with underlying health issues and one adult with no health issues. Okubo said state epidemiologist Dr. Sarah Park confirmed the deaths, which occurred between June and August.
No other details have been released.
The first swine flu cases in Hawaii were confirmed May 5.
Swine flu and seasonal flu target different groups. Seasonal flu typically affects the very young and very old and people with underlying chronic medical conditions.
Swine flu also affects people with chronic medical conditions but doesn’t seem to be as severe among people over age 65. Most hospitalizations and deaths are in younger people.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have identified 40 deaths in children due to swine flu, which was first identified in April.
Nationwide there have been 550 lab-confirmed deaths and 8,800 hospitalizations.
