Red flag warning in effect for leeward areas on all islands

A red flag warning will be in effect for leeward areas of all islands from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the National Weather Service says.
A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions — strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures — are occurring or will occur shortly.
The weather service says the combination of dry brush and strong winds create dangerously ideal conditions for combustion and rapid fire growth.
The warning comes as a three-day-old brushfire in the Waiawa Ridge area smolders and another on Molokai consumes acreage for a sixth day.
Yesterday, Maui County Civil Defense director Gen Iinuma said he hoped the Molokai fire would be a reminder to residents “to help us and help themselves” during the dry season.
Iinuma said residents should clear dry brush from their properties to reduce sources of fuel for fires. They also should be especially vigilant and immediately report any fire.
