Four move on at PGA Q-School

Four golfers with Hawai'i ties will continue their pursuit of a PGA Tour card after advancing past the first stage of Qualifying School yesterday.

Hilo's Jarett Hamamoto, Punahou alum Jim Seki and Kamehameha alum Keoke Cotner advanced out of a first stage tournament at Lakeland, Fla., and will play in the second stage at one of six sites Nov. 18 to 21.

Maui's Sam Cyr advanced out of the first stage at Santee, Calif.

The top 22 at each first stage site after four rounds advance to the second stage.

Hamamoto, a two-time state high school champion who played for the University of Hawai'i, finished tied for eighth at 11-under-par 277 after a final round 3-under 69.

Seki, who now lives in Palo Alto, Calif., shot a 68 and was tied for 11th at 279.

Cotner, who has played on the Nationwide Tour and now lives in Bedford, Texas, shot a 71 and was tied for 14th at 280.

Ted Potter of Silver Springs, Fla., shot a 66 and was the medalist at 268.

Cyr shot a 2-over 74 to finish tied for 19th at 2-over 290. Brian Guetz of Scottsdale, Ariz., was the medalist at Santee, Calif., at 72—281.

Tony Finau of Lehi, Utah, who represents Turtle Bay, shot a 72 and was tied for 39th at 2-under 214 after the third round at Lantana, Texas.

The final stage is Dec. 2 to 7 at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla.

VOLLEYBALL

VULCANS SWEEP

Josimara Pinheiro had 15 kills to lead No. 16 Hawai'i-Hilo to a 25-15, 25-19, 25-18 victory over Chaminade in Pacific West Conference women's volleyball last night at McCabe Gym.

The Vulcans are 23-1 overall and 13-1 in the PacWest. Chaminade is 4-20 and 2-12.

Pinheiro added nine digs. Laura Rodriguez had eight digs and four aces for the Vulcans.

Kylee Pedro led Chaminade with five kills.

BOISE ST. STOPS UH

Kaylea Perenon scored in the 76th minute to lift Boise State to a 2-1 victory over Hawai'i in Western Athletic Conference women's soccer yesterday at Boise, Idaho.

The Rainbow Wahine (6-11-1 and 2-5 WAC) will conclude their season tomorrow at Idaho. Boise State is 9-6-4 and 4-3.

Mari Punzal scored on a shot from 30 yards out to give UH a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.

The Broncos tied it on a goal by Brandy Hickcox.

UHH MEN WIN, 5-0

Logan Montenegro scored two goals and assisted on another to help host Hawai'i-Hilo to a 5-0 Pacific West Conference men's soccer victory over Academy of Art.

UH-Hilo is 9-8 overall and 8-3 PacWest. Academy of Art is 4-12 and 1-10.

Eduardo Ayala, Omar Garcia and Ivan Mercado also scored for the Vulcans.

In the women's match, Academy of Art defeated UH-Hilo, 2-0.

Academy of Art is 2-13-2 and 2-7-2. UH-Hilo is 3-10-4 and 2-6-3.
