Kollai fastest local in XTERRA

Eric Kollai, an emergency physician from Kailua, was Hawai'i's fastest racer at the XTERRA World Championship in Maui on Sunday.

Kollai finished the 1-mile ocean swim, 20-mile mountain bike, and 7-mile trail run in 3 hours, 13 minutes, 21 seconds.

Kollai placed 65th overall and seventh in the 30-34 division behind athletes from England, New Zealand, Idaho, Tennessee and Arkansas.

Of the 514 athletes who started the race at the Makena Beach & Golf Resort, 56 from Hawai'i "survived" and one won his division —Fouad "Ed" Fattoumy, who captured the physically challenged world title for the third time in four years.

Amy Eck, who earned national notoriety two years ago when she competed with a broken arm and a bright pink cast, placed ninth in the 30-34 division and earned roundtrip airfare from Hawaiian Airlines for winning the Double award, which is given to the amateur with the fastest combined time at the Ironman World Championship on the Big Island and XTERRA World Championship on Maui. Eck's Ironman time was 11:13:01 and her XTERRA time was 3:59:57 for a combined 15:12:58.

OTHER ISLE ATHLETES

Four others completed the double.

Richard Cochrane of Kailua finished 17th in the 35-39 division in 3:29:00 and went 10:16:10 in Kona for a combined 13:45:10.

Mark Geoghegan was third in the 45-49 division at XTERRA in 3:16:58 and finished Ironman in 11:02:44 for a combined 14:19:42.

Nicholas Kaiser (4:13:31 XTERRA) combined for a 15:24:51 and took fifth in the 55-59 division and Linda Greentree, 50, of Kona did Ironman in 15:48:47 and XTERRA in 5:44:37, totaling 21:33:24.

Also, Honoka'a's Karen Brisson was the top Hawai'i female, placing fourth in the 40-44 division in 3:50:30.

Hawai'i's only pro in the race, Chad Seymour (3:17:16), finished 36th in the elite division.

Brittany Clawson, a freshman at UH-Mänoa where she is a kinesiology major and member of the sailing team, finished second in the 15-19 division.
