Another day, another injury.
The University of Hawaii men's basketball team will be walking wounded into tomorrow's exhibition game against Hawaii-Hilo.
Senior forward Brandon Adams joined the injury list yesterday when he hurt his left ankle during practice at the Stan Sheriff Center.
He left the arena on crutches and will likely have to sit out the exhibition game. And he should have plenty of company on the bench.
Four other players either sat out the entire practice, or were limited to non-running drills yesterday.
"Obviously, our numbers are not what we would like in terms of healthy bodies, but this is an opportunity to look at the healthy bodies we do have," Hawaii head coach Bob Nash said. "Injuries are a part of the game, and we're not exempt from that."
Douglas Kurtz, the team's new 7-foot center, is also expected to sit out tomorrow with a knee injury.
Three other key players forward Roderick Flemings and guards Jeremy Lay and Dwain Williams are considered questionable.
Flemings, the top returning player from last season, has been bothered by an abdominal injury for the past week.
Lay (leg) and Williams (thumb) are the team's new guard recruits.
"No matter who's in there, we still have to play the game," senior Adhar Mayen said. "It's going to be a good test to see where we're at."
The injuries created a makeshift lineup during yesterday's practice. The "first unit" featured Hiram Thompson at point guard, Mayen at shooting guard, Bill Amis at small forward, Petras Balocka at power forward and Paul Campbell at center.
All five of those players started at one time or another last season, although Mayen is primarily considered a small forward and Amis a power forward.
"That's the beauty of having experienced guys," Nash said. "They know where they need to be and when they need to be there. It's just a matter of timing and working together now."
The 'Bows have 14 active players on the roster (redshirts Zane Johnson and Aleksandar Milovic are not eligible to play in games). If the five injured players are not able to play tomorrow, that will leave Nash with nine players to choose from, including walk-ons Beau Albrechtson, Rykin Enos and Leroy Lutu Jr.
What's more, Amis (ankle), Lutu (knee), Mayen (concussion) and Ji Xiang (knee) all missed practice time last week, but were able to practice yesterday.
"If they're healthy, they better be ready to play," Nash said.
Lutu was the first replacement for both Thompson and Mayen during yesterday's practice, so he could see extended minutes tomorrow.
"You have to take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves," Lutu said. "Hopefully, I can perform well and help the team."
Hawaii-Hilo head coach Jeff Law is more concerned about his own players, who are healthy but small and inexperienced.
The Vulcans relied on a rotation of seven players last season, and only one guard Bryan Ngo is back.
"We feel like we brought in some quality recruits," Law said. "The problem is we have so many new guys, nobody is really comfortable yet."
The final result and statistics from the exhibition game will not count for either team.
The 'Bows edged the Vulcans, 72-70, in an exhibition game last season.
