More Asian films on cable, Web
By Jeff Chung
KLIFE, a video-on-demand channel on Oce-anic Digital Cable channel 81, is partnering with www.AsiaPacificFilms.com to bring you more Korean films in November.
www.AsiaPacificFilms.com, a new venture launching this month, streams independent Asian and Pacific films on its Web site and also on KLIFE for $5.99. Founder and president Jeannette Paulson Hereniko says that although more than half of all films produced annually are from Asia and the Pacific, 95 percent of them have no distribution avenue. www.AsiaPacificFilms.com will try to help fill that gap.
Hereniko describes www.AsiaPacificFilms.com as "a premiere collection of independent Asia and Pacific films that educates, entertains, inspires and enables people to think beyond existing boundaries."
A large and varied selection of films from Azerbaijan, China, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Lebanon, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam have been digitized and are available at www.AsiaPacificFilms.com. All have achieved international recognition and awards.
Hereniko founded the Hawaii International Film Festival and was HIFF director from 1981 to 1996, introducing a number of Korean films and directors to an American audience. At the Pusan International Film Festival, she was honored Oct. 9 with the Korean Cinema Award for her dedication in introducing Korean cinema to the U.S.
Hereniko is in Hawaii with director Lee Doo Yong to launch the new Web site, as well as several of the director's films on KLIFE. These are art films that give you more insight into different cultures.
