Halawa prison inmate indicted in murder of fellow inmate

Advertiser Staff

Prison inmate James Gouveia was indicted today on a charge of manslaughter in the death this month of fellow inmate Monte Young.

Gouveia, 22, allegedly punched Young, 46, several times during an argument at Halawa Correctional Facility Oct. 14.
Young was found lying in the prison recreation yard and was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where he later died.
Young was serving a 100-year sentence for the May 10, 1997 unprovoked killing of a stranger at the University Avenue Burger King restaurant.
Gouveia was convicted of car theft charges and was sent to prison this year after he repeatedly violated the terms of an earlier probation sentence.
