Prep football: Kailua blanks Campbell in Red

KAILUA — A banged-up but rejuvenated Kailua football team is now in the O‘ahu Interscholastic Association quarterfinals.

The Surfriders pounced on and then held off Campbell, 21-0, in first-round playoff action last night to advance to Friday’s quarterfinal at defending state runner-up Leilehua.
Kailua, which started the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division season at 0-3, now has won three of its last four games and is 4-5 overall.
“This week was different, we practiced harder and as a family,” said Surfriders linebacker Martin Lagazo, a 5-foot-6, 195-pound senior who recovered three fumbles last night. “Before we used to play as individuals, but now we play as a team. We believe in the coaches, and they believe in us.”
Kailua wasted no time in making believers of a statewide OC16 TV audience, converting two early fumbles into touchdowns for a 14-0 lead barely three minutes into the game. Keola Kiko-Kahawai recovered a loose ball on the Sabers’ second play from scrimmage after the opening kickoff, giving the Surfriders possession at the Campbell 30-yard line.
They cashed in three plays later, on Chevy Mikaele’s 29-yard TD pass to Eric Lum, who then kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead. On the Sabers’ first play after the ensuing kickoff, Lagazo recovered a fumble at the Campbell 20 and Kailua scored two plays later on Bubba Sato’s 25-yard scamper up the middle.
Lum’s PAT made it 14-0 with 8:49 still to play in the first quarter.
“We just couldn’t execute,” said Sabers coach Amosa Amosa.
Campbell settled down after that and it remained 14-0 until the third quarter, when another fumble recovery by Lagazo — this time near midfield — set up another Surfriders touchdown.
Kailua converted five plays later on Mikaele’s 10-yard scoring pass to Corey Lau. Lum’s extra point made it 21-0 with 8:50 remaining in the third quarter.
The Surfriders suffered major injuries last month, losing starting quarterback Kahaku Iaea to a fractured collarbone and standout linebacker Calen Friel to a torn knee ligament.
But players like Lagazo and Mikaele have stepped in admirably, Kailua coach Gary Rosolowich said.
“The kids are battling,” Rosolowich said. “I give them all credit.”
