Brothers killed in car wreck at Makapuu

Advertiser Staff

Two brothers died in a single-car crash early this morning at Makapuu that may have been caused by racing, police said.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office has identified the boys as Ikaikakane Makekau, 19 of Kailua Kona and Benjamin Makekau, 20, of Waimanalo.
Emergency medical Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic said paramedics and fire officials received a call at 2:30 a.m. Both were declared dead at the scene.
Honolulu Police shut down the Kalanianaole Highway at Makapuu Lighthouse and at Makai Pier until 8:20 a.m.
They were driving in a 2001 silver Toyota Corolla heading toward Makapuu on Kalanianaole Highway near the Hawaii Pacific University Oceanic Research Facility, when the accident occurred, police said.
Their vehicle hit an embankment, went airborn and hit a fence before hitting a wooden building, police said.
Police believe the young men may have been racing another vehicle. Excessive speed may have been a factor in the accident, police said.
