MILILANI — Trent McKinney completed 18 of 27 passes for 174 yards and four touchdowns and Mililani held off a second-half Kaimuki rally last night to win, 47-35, in the first round of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association football playoffs.

The Trojans, seeded No. 4 in the OIA Red Conference Western Division, improved to 7-2 overall after two straight losses and will face East champion Kahuku (8-0) in next week's quarterfinals.

The game is set for 7:30 p.m. at Kahuku's Carleton E. Weimer Field and will be televised live statewide on OC16.

For one half last night, it appeared as if Mililani would cruise into that matchup, as the Trojans took a 34-6 lead 17 seconds before intermission on McKinney's 9-yard TD pass to Hassan Richardson.

McKinney had thrown three earlier touchdown passes to Bryson Calma.

But the Bulldogs (2-7) came out firing in the third quarter, taking the opening kickoff and going 90 yards in just five plays, capped by Eddie Char's 8-yard quarterback keeper to paydirt.

Char then completed a two-point conversion pass to Johnnie Tuitele to make it 34-14.

Kaimuki closed to 34-21 after the first play of the fourth quarter, an 11-yard scoring run by Chester Su'a followed by Kaleo Mauricio's extra point.

Mililani stretched it to 41-21 after backup quarterback Nainoa Pihana's 2-yard TD run, but the Bulldogs answered with Pep Fonokalafi's 1-yard touchdown plunge and Mauricio's PAT to cut it to 41-28 with 7:52 remaining.

Kaimuki's Sean Carl then recovered the ensuing onside kick and the Bulldogs marched all the way to the Trojans' 10-yard line, but Fonokalafi was stopped short on fourth-and-3.

Kris Ornellas then effectively sealed the victory with a 25-yard interception return for a score with 1:04 left.
