Rocks thrown at spearfishermen off the Big Island's North Kohala coast apparently led to gunfire Oct. 9.
Police were summoned to a possible shooting near Honomakau Road in Hawi shortly after 10 a.m. Oct. 9, said Lt. Glenn Uehana.
As a group of men was spearfishing offshore from a small Zodiac-type boat they noticed rocks being thrown at them from shore, he said.
Apparently, one of the spearfishermen had a gun and fired two to three shots toward shore, he said.
One of the spearfishermen was hit by a rock and was treated by medics at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
The detective assigned to the case, Walter Ah Mow, was not available for comment on Friday; however, Area II Criminal Investigations Section Detective Myra Iwamoto said that police have identified the individual who threw the rocks.
No arrests have been made in connection with the incident, she said.
Iwamoto said she was unable to provide information regarding actions taken toward the party who fired the gun, as she is not assigned to the case. She did note that the investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information or who may have seen the incident is asked call Ah Mow at 326-4646, ext. 238, or the department's nonemergency line at 935-3311. Those who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 329-8181 in Kona or 961-8300 in Hilo. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.
