ULUPALAKUA — A woman was killed and a man suffered severe burns when an old plantation-style house in Ulupalakua burned to the ground early Saturday.

The woman who died is believed to be a visitor from Washington who was staying overnight in the home, according to a county news release. Police have not released her name, pending notification of next of kin.
A second woman in the home escaped uninjured.
The man suffered burns to 40 percent of his body and was initially transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center and later transported to a burn unit at Straub Clinic & Hospital on Oahu, the release said.
The fire was reported at 1:15 a.m., and when firefighters arrived at the scene at 1:33 a.m., the home was fully engulfed, said Battalion Chief Derrick Arruda.
Police who responded to the scene said flames were around 60 feet high, as tall as the trees that surround the home.
The fire was brought under control at 2:17 a.m. and extinguished at 7:33 a.m., Arruda said.
During the cleanup and dousing of hot spots, the charred remains of a female was discovered by fire personnel, the county release said.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated. The release said preliminary reports indicate that no foul play was involved. The fire caused approximately $110,000 in damage to the dwelling and $30,000 to the contents.
The Kula and Makawao fire crews along with the Kahului hazardous materials crew, rescue crew and water tanker all responded to the blaze, along with Arruda and Maui police detectives and investigators.
All that remained of the home Saturday morning was black rubble and a flight of stairs leading to nowhere.
Fire officials said they had been called to 542 Kini Drive, although the address is not marked on some maps. The road is located makai of Kula Highway, about a half-mile past the Ulupalakua Ranch Store.
The single-story 1,000-square-foot structure was surrounded by trees at the end of a long, grassy driveway and could be seen from the road.
Neighbor Braxton Schuffert was at the property Saturday morning making calls on his cell phone as friends stopped by to offer help.
Schuffert said he tried to put out the fire, and that the house is owned by his best friend.
He declined to comment further.
