Aaron M. Susa was charged with second-degree murder today in the death of a 25-year-old New Mexico college student who was on vacation in Waikiki, police said.
Susa, 31, is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail, said Honolulu Police Department Maj. Clayton Kau. Susa will remain in police custody until Monday when he makes his initial appearance in District Court, Kau said.
Witnesses told police that they had seen Susa and Bryanna Antone together at 1:40 a.m. Oct. 2 leaving the Waikiki Ohana West Hotel. Hours later a jogger found her dead on the beach fronting The Royal Hawaiian hotel.
Susa, a convicted felon, had been arrested Thursday on two outstanding traffic warrants and a recent probation revocation warrant, following his release from The Queen's Medical Center, where he had been treated for an undisclosed ailment. His bail for those warrants was set at $20,230, said Kau.
Antone, a film student at the College of Santa Fe, had been in Honolulu to celebrate her birthday and join her family here for a dentists' convention. Antone had turned 25 on Sept. 21.
Court documents show that Susa, a native of San Diego, had been released from the Honolulu Federal Detention Center the day before Antone's body was found. Federal Bureau of Prison records show he had been serving four months for parole violation.
Public records show Susa has been convicted on drug and burglary charges here and on the Mainland.
