Fourth-ranked Hawai‘i wasted no time getting coach Dave Shoji his 999th volleyball victory tonight, blitzing San Jose State, 25-12, 25-11, 25-17, in 74 minutes.

The Western Athletic Conference match was watched by 4,250 at Stan Sheriff Center.
Shoji will attempt to become the second Division I women’s volleyball coach to win 1,000 matches Wednesday when the Rainbows host Louisiana Tech. Hawai‘i (15-2, 6-0) has won its past 11, losing just one set in the streak.
San Jose State — small, young and winless in 14 tries this season — could do nothing to slow the roll tonight.
Hawai‘i hit .519 in the first set, with freshman Brittany Hewitt burying all five swings she took and adding three stuffs. The Rainbow Wahine scored the final nine points of Set 2, stifling the Spartans into -.094 hitting (5 kills, 8 errors).
For the final set, UH brought in four new starters and the blitz went on. Redshirt freshman Emily Maeda, injured at the beginning of the season, made her first appearance of the year in the final points.
UH senior Aneli Cubi-Otineru, who missed Thursday’s match with a lower leg injury, started last night and contributed eight kills and 10 digs, including a spectacular save as she slid into the courtside seats.
Kanani Danielson had a match-high 11 kills and was in on half of Hawai‘i’s 10 blocks. Hewitt had eight kills, hit .700 and was in on six blocks in just two sets. Stephanie Brandt had four aces.
Freshen Alex Akana (5 kills) and Caitlin Andrade (4), both out of Kamehameha led the Spartans. Andrade, SJSU’s setter, also had 10 digs. Kristal Tsukano, a Spartan senior out of Kamehameha, added three kills and eight digs.
