Punahou graduate Michelle Wie is not golfing this week, but she is not in class at Stanford either.

Wie is joining pro golfers Padraig Harrington of Ireland, Suzann Pettersen of Norway and 16-year-old British Amateur champion Matteo Manassero of Italy to participate in the final presentation before the International Olympic Committee membership tomorrow during the IOC's 121st session. Tiger Woods will contribute a videotaped message.

"I think it would be the highest achievement for any golfer, or for any athlete, to be part of the Olympics," said Wie, who was a vital part of the winning U.S. team at this year's Solheim Cup. "When you represent your country, when you carry the American flag, it takes me to a whole other place. It makes the event so much more remarkable. It just means so much more to me."

The four golfers will join Ty Votaw, Executive Director of the IGF Olympic Golf Committee, which has coordinated golf's Olympic bid, and Peter Dawson, chief executive of The R&A and joint secretary of the IGF. Golf and rugby sevens, the two sports recommended for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro by the IOC Executive Board, will present their final case to the full IOC membership before it votes that same day on whether to accept one, both or neither sport. Both need a majority vote by the IOC to be included in 2016.

ACADEMICS

ORIDE RECEIVES HONOR

Lihu'e's Kelli Oride has been named an HP Scholastic Junior All-American, the American Junior Golf Association and HP announced. The team consists of 12 girls and 12 boys who demonstrate the ability to excel on the golf course and in the classroom.

To be eligible for the HP Scholastic Junior All-America Team, girls must have placed in the top five at an AJGA Open or Invitational. Selections were then based on grade point average, class rank, SAT/ACT scores, leadership skills, community service and writing ability. Candidates were required to submit an essay on an original topic relating to golf.

By being named to this team, each player is eligible for next month's Polo Golf Junior Classic, one of the most prestigious events in junior golf.

Oride is a junior at Kaua'i High School, where she has a 4.0 cumulative GPA and is ranked first out of 318 students. She is an active member of Key Club, devoting more than 40 hours to helping out in the Lihu'e community. In June, Oride captured her second AJGA victory at the ClubCorp Mission Hills Desert Junior after winning a three-way sudden-death playoff.

UH WOMEN

'BOWS FINISH 11TH

The University of Hawai'i women's team shot rounds of 305-321-310 at the Heather Farr/CU Memorial Monday and Tuesday at the Colorado National Golf Club. Its 936 total was good for 11th.

Senior Corie Hou led the Rainbow Wahine with a 14-over-par 230. Hou rose 17 places with her final-round 74 and tied for 28th. Sophomore Erika Lundberg (79—232) and freshman Brigitte Baker (81—232) tied for 36th. Also competing for the 'Bows were junior Brittany Bomar (76—244) and freshman Ka'ili Britos (84—254).

Texas Tech won the team title at 18-over 882 (290-296-296), 12 shots ahead of Nebraska. Tech's Alex Gibson was medalist, going wire-to-wire with 70-71-72—214.

Up next for UH is the Stanford Intercollegiate, Oct. 16 to 18, in California.
