Blaisdell concert will honor piano teacher Ellen Masaki
Hawai'i's music community will honor the legacy of renowned piano teacher Ellen Masaki at a free, family-oriented concert at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.
The concert will celebrate Masaki's values, music and inspiration, shared with hundreds of students throughout her more than 50-year teaching career. Masaki, 81, died Sept. 7 after a battle with stomach cancer.
The Honolulu Symphony Orchestra, led by Maestra Ann Krinitsky, will join with some of Masaki's former students, including concert pianists Lisa Nakamichi and Sean Kennard, in the tribute concert. The program features works that Masaki treasured, including some by Mozart, Beethoven and Rachmaninoff.
Young pianist, composer and Masaki student T.J. Tario will join the orchestra in Rachmaninoff's Concerto for Piano No. 2. In addition, five Masaki students will perform Khachaturian's "Sabre Dance" on five pianos.
Admission to the concert is free, and no tickets are required.
