HONOLULU — The Hawaii Capitol and nine other state office buildings are getting an energy-efficient upgrade.

The state announced Tuesday it has awarded a $34 million contract to energy services company Noresco, LLC, to upgrade lighting, computer power management, air conditioning, building controls, elevators and generators.
The project is expected to reduce utility bills by 30 percent. Savings will amount to $1.9 million this fiscal year and $2.8 million next fiscal year.
Funding comes from general obligation bonds and a commercial loan.
Besides the Capitol, other buildings getting energy upgrades over the next two years include the state archives, the Hemmeter building and the state office tower.
