Ho'ala School urges safe driving

Ho'ala School recently participated in a sign-waving campaign with the police department to promote safe driving. City managing director Kirk Caldwell joined Ho'ala teachers, students and staff members at the corner of Wilikina Drive and Kamehameha Highway. So did representatives of some area businesses, including Central Pacific Bank, and Ho'ala School board member Susie Peterson, owner of Peterson Egg Farm.

Halloween trick-or-treat parade for kids

Market City Shopping Center will host a Halloween Costume Parade at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. Children in their Halloween costumes will participate in a safe, guided trick-or-treating parade through the shopping center. Liliha library hosts anime movie event

Liliha Public Library will hold a Teen Cosplay & Anime Movie event Saturday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the meeting room. This cosplay (costume play) is a social gathering where you come dressed up as a manga or anime character. Ages 12 and older are invited to this free event, which includes a costume contest and showing of a new anime movie. Call 587-7577.

Free retina screenings come to Moloka'i

To provide free retina screenings to underserved populations, the Molokai Lions Club will sponsor the O'ahu-based Project Vision Bus — shipped courtesy of Young Brothers, and with support from the Hawaii Lions Foundation. The vision screening bus will make several stops on Moloka'i: 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 13 at Kilohana Recreation Center; 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 14 at Kualapu'u Recreation Center; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 15 at Home Pumehana, Kaunakakai. Obama election movie on tap for Oct. 29

Oceanic Time Warner Cable and the City & County of Honolulu will present a free public screening of the HBO documentary "By The People: The Election of Barack Obama" at the Waikiki Shell on Oct. 29.
