MILILANI — No. 10-ranked Kapolei handed No. 3 Mililani its first loss of the season, spoiling the Trojans' homecoming game with a 41-24 upset victory in front of a near-capacity crowd of more than 4,000 last night at John Kauinana Stadium.

The Hurricanes took advantage of five turnovers by the Trojans to improve to 5-3 overall, 4-2 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Red West Division. Mililani fell to 6-1 and 4-1 in league play, and may have lost its top player, Taz Stevenson, who exited the game early in the second quarter after an apparent head injury.

The Hurricanes were led by Shaydon Akuna's four-touchdown effort .

"It's a great win for our program," Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said. "We felt like if all our guys played like they're capable, then we were a team to be reckoned with."

Kapolei struck first. Hurricane quarterback Akuna's pass on third-and-6 fell incomplete, but the Trojans accepted a holding penalty, which left Kapolei with third-and-18. Akuna found Donnie King for 43 yards and two plays later Kainoa Pakele broke an 18-yard run to set-up a 1-yard Akuna TD sneak. Eric Morales' kick with 8:10 left in the first quarter gave the Hurricanes a 7-0 lead.

The Trojans answered with a nine-play, 80-yard drive that was capped by a 5-yard TD run by Stevenson.

In the second quarter, Akuna put the Hurricanes back ahead on a 15-yard option keeper, which was set-up by King's 25-yard punt return to the Trojans' 32-yard line. Kapolei led 13-7 with 10:04 until halftime.

Mililani put together a 12-play drive that covered 77 yards, but had to settle for a 30-yard Spencer Sword field goal to cut it to 13-10 with 5:35 left in the half.

Kapolei's King answered with an 84-yard TD return on the ensuing kickoff. Pakele received the kick at the 14-yard line and handed off to King on a reverse at the 16. King found running room on the right side of the field and leapt over a defender around the Mililani 35-yard line, before beating two more Trojans on his way to the end zone.

The Hurricanes led 20-10 at the half.

The Trojans closed to within a field goal after they recycled a Kapolei turnover into a 20-yard TD pass from Trent McKinney to Kama Paulo, but the Hurricanes got another special teams score when Pakele returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards to make it 27-17 midway through the third quarter.
