OHA to help kids afford school

Advertiser Staff

As part of a new two-year pilot program, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs is offering financial assistance of up to $5,000 to qualified Native Hawaiian families who have children with significant educational costs.

The Kako'o Ho'oana'auao K-12 Family Education Assistance Program will make available $500,000 a year for the next two years to provide Native Hawaiian families greater access to educational opportunities.

The program will be administered this year by Chaminade University.

Applications will be accepted from parents or caregivers with a child attending a private school (kindergarten through 12th grade) or other specialized academic program in Hawai'i that incurs significant financial costs.

In addition, applicants must:

  • Live on or be eligible to live on Hawaiian Homelands;

  • Demonstrate financial need;

  • Register with OHA's Hawaiian Registry Program.

    Applications will be accepted through Dec. 1, with awards disbursed in early 2010 for the current 2009-10 school year.

    To apply online, visit www.chaminade.edu/oha or www.oha.org/edu. Application forms, also available online, may be sent to: Financial Aid Office, Chaminade University of Honolulu, 3140 Wai'alae Ave., Ching Hall, Room 11, Honolulu, HI 96816-1578.
