University of Hawai‘i quarterback Greg Alexander will undergo season-ending surgery on his left knee tomorrow, head coach Greg McMackin announced today.
UH would not release the specific injury, other than to say it was major ligament damage. But people with familiar with the situation said Alexander was diagnosed with a torn ACL.
Alexander is a senior and because he has played more than three games this season his UH career is over. He is not eligible for a medical hardship.
“I’m deeply disappointed with these results, but it’s part of the game and I wish the team the best throughout the rest of the season,” Alexander said in a news release.
Said McMackin: “This is a huge loss for our football program and I’m just heartbroken."
Alexander was hurt late in the third quarter of the Warriors, 27-6 loss at Louisiana Tech on Wednesday.
Alexander scrambled away from a heavy pass rush when he was knocked down by linebacker Adrien Cole near the UH sideline.
"It was a clean hit," Alexander said after the game. "The guy hit me pretty good. ... My foot just got caught on the turf."
Alexander was replaced by Bryant Moniz, who played the rest of the game.
Moniz, a third-year sophomore from Leilehua High, is the leading choice to start in the Oct. 10 game against Fresno State. He joined the Warriors in January.
Moniz played for Fresno City College in 2007. He attended a local community college — but did not play — in the 2008 fall semester.
