The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Kukui is back in Honolulu after spending five months in San Francisco for a "major maintenance overhaul," the Coast Guard said.
The ship and its 49 crew members returned late last night. The cutter is one of three buoy tenders assigned to the 14th District.
The maintenance work included some 30 projects completed by the ship's crew as well as more than 130 contracted projects.
On the journey back from San Francisco, the crew received a distress call from a disabled vessel in danger o grounding on rocks in heavy seas. The crew located the vessel, prepared a small boat for launch and was able to direct a nearby Coast Guard rescue boat to tow it to safety, the Coast Guard reported.
