The killing of Caddy the dog first generated a criminal prosecution of two men who slaughtered the animal and now has led to a civil suit filed by the dog's owner.

The suit was filed last week by Frank Manuma, who took Caddy with him to Moanalua Golf Club in December 2007, intending to take the 8-month-old puppy with him while he played a round of golf.

The dog wasn't allowed on the course and was kept in a maintenance shed while Manuma was on the course.

That's where employees Nelson Domingo and Saturnino Palting found the animal, removed it and later slaughtered it for food.

Earlier this year they pleaded guilty to charges of first-degree animal cruelty and were sentenced to five years of probation.

Manuma's lawsuit, against Moanalua Golf Club, said he suffered "extreme emotional distress, anger and sadness" over the death of his dog.

He said the club refused to reimburse him the value of his membership, purchased in 2007 for $8,500, or to transfer the membership to another golf facility.

Manuma is now seeking unspecified monetary damages from the club.
