• Nov. 22: A police officer shot and wounded a man behind the wheel of a fleeing car as it dragged another officer down Cooke Street.

• Today: One of three officers investigating a stolen truck on Makuahine Place in Kalihi shot and wounded the 21-year-old driver of another stolen car as the driver tried to flee, endangering one of the officers.

A plainclothes police officer investigating a stolen truck shot and wounded the driver of another stolen car today as the driver attempted to flee the scene.

The 21-year-old driver who was shot was identified by police as Reinier Sales, 21, of Kalihi.
According to Honolulu Police Department Capt. Letha DeCaires, three officers from the HPD crime reduction unit observed a gray pickup truck previously reported stolen pulling into Makuahine Place in Kalihi and parking in front of a residence about 10:30 a.m.
A white Dodge Neon was parked facing the truck, and as officers checked both vehicles, the driver of the Neon revved the engine and attempted to drive away, endangering one of the officers, DeCaires said.
The officer shot the 21-year-old driver, who was then subdued by the three officers and arrested. An unidentified female apparently involved in the case fled in the direction of Likelike Highway.
She was described as having long blond hair, and wearing a brown shirt and black pants.
Emergency Medical Services transported the driver to an area hospital in serious condition.
DeCaires said he sustained a gunshot wound “on the right rib area.”
The driver has four prior misdemeanor convictions, DeCaires said.
An officer also sustained a minor wrist injury in the incident.
