State football: Farrington stops Honokaa, 48-16

KAILUA, KONA, Hawai‘i — Harry Tuimaseve rushed for 239 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries and Farrington held off a spirited challenge by Honoka‘a tonight to win, 48-16, in the first round of the First Hawaiian Bank/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Football Championships.
The Governors improved to 10-2 and will face O‘ahu Interscholastic Association champion Kahuku (11-0) in Friday’s semifinals at Aloha Stadium.
Honoka‘a’s season ends at 8-4 after its first Big Island Interscholastic Federation since 1974.
Farrington jumped out to a 21-0 lead midway through the second quarter, but the Dragons closed it to 21-9 by halftime and had the ball trailing 28-16 midway through the fourth.
But Govs linebacker Seth Ilae recovered a fumble near midfield and Tuimaseve scored on an 11-yard touchdown run four plays later. Jared Hakuole then completed a two-point conversion pass to Siaosi Feleunga to make it 36-16 with 4:36 remaining.
After a dead ball personal foul penalty on Honoka‘a, Farrington recovered the ensuing onside kick, and Scotland Smith scored on a 36-yard scamper to put the Governors ahead, 42-16, with 3:57 left.
Farrington defensive back Kula Solomon made an interception on the Dragons’ next possession, and Smith sealed the game with a 7-yard TD run four plays later.
