City lifeguards have posted signs urging beachgoers to stay out of the water after a 10-foot shark was spotted about 2:15 p.m. today at Maili Beach Park on Oahu’s Leeward Coast.
Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department, said a diver spotted the shark about 500 yards off shore and swam into the beach to report it to lifeguards.
The lifeguards immediately checked the area, confirmed the shark sighting and determined the shark was displaying aggressive behavior, Cheplic said.
Beachgoers are being asked to stay out of the water for one mile on either side of Maili Beach Park.
The signs are expected to remain posted at least through the end of the day, Cheplic said.
There was no word on what species of shark was sighted.
