Soccer: Dane pays $180,000 for interrupting Euro qualifier

COPENHAGEN — A court has ordered a Danish man to pay $180,100 for interrupting a European Championship qualifier between Denmark and Sweden.
The Copenhagen City Court says Ronni Noervig was responsible for the financial loss the Danish soccer federation sustained after he stormed the pitch in an attempt to attack German referee Herbert Fandel on June 2, 2007. The match was ended, and Sweden was awarded a 3-0 win.
The federation had sued Noervig for $320,180 in decreased ticket sales and extra expenses after Denmark was banned from playing its next two qualifiers in Copenhagen.
In Wednesday's ruling, the court said Noervig should pay less because of "insufficient security" at the stadium.
