San Jose State football coach Dick Tomey will retire after the season.

The school said late yesterday that Tomey would hold a formal news conference today to discuss his decision. The Spartans, 1-8 after Saturday's 24-9 loss to Utah State, have struggled and their only win came against non-Football Bowl Subdivision school Cal Poly on Sept. 26.

San Jose State hosts Hawai'i, where Tomey was head coach from 1977-86, on Saturday.

Tomey, 71, is finishing his fifth season with the Spartans, 29th overall as a major college head coach and 46th in the business. He has an overall record of 182-143-7 at Hawai'i, Arizona and San Jose State.

Tomey is president of the 10,000-plus member American Football Coaches Association.

TROJANS TUMBLE

After another humiliating loss, Southern California tumbled to its worst ranking since Pete Carroll's Trojans began their run as one of college football's best programs in 2002.

USC was No. 22 in The Associated Press Top 25 released yesterday, dropping 11 spots after losing 55-21 to Stanford. The Trojans have been ranked in 128 consecutive media polls dating to the start of the 2002 season, but never this low.

USC hasn't been ranked lower than No. 13 since October 2002.

Meanwhile, Stanford soared up the rankings to No. 14, its best showing since being No. 11 in the last regular-season poll of 2001.

Florida remained No. 1 and Alabama leapfrogged Texas into the No. 2 spot, one of only two small changes to the top 10. The other three undefeated major college teams were next, with TCU at No. 4, Cincinnati at No. 5 and Boise State No. 6 for the second consecutive week.

The BCS standings had the same top six teams as the AP poll.

ELSEWHERE

East Carolina beats Tulsa: Dominique Lindsay ran for a career-high 172 yards, Darryl Freeney had a career-best 152 yards receiving and East Carolina maintained its lead in Conference USA's East Division with a 44-17 victory over host Tulsa last night.

The Pirates (6-4, 5-1) dominated on offense in the first half and then sealed the game with three defensive touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Patrick Pinkney threw for 275 yards and two touchdowns, to Lindsay and Freeney. East Carolina is a game ahead of UAB, Southern Miss and Central Florida with two games left.

G.J. Kinne threw for 236 yards with two touchdowns and the two interceptions, and Damaris Johnson had 14 catches for 135 yards for Tulsa (4-6, 2-4), which is in jeopardy of missing out on a bowl after losing five straight.

Texas suspends player: Freshman kick returner D.J. Monroe has been suspended indefinitely after being arrested on a drunken driving charge.

Monroe was arrested on Interstate 35 hours after Texas' win over Baylor and taken to the Hays County jail, said Lt. Leroy Opiela of the Hays County Sheriff's office. He was released yesterday morning after posting $3,000 bond.

Monroe set a Texas record with two kickoff returns for touchdowns this season for the Longhorns (10-0). He also has 110 yards on 20 carries at tailback.

Stanford working on contract: Coach Jim Harbaugh is close to completing a contract extension with the school.

Athletic director Bob Bowlsby said yesterday in an e-mail that a formal announcement of a new deal was expected to come shortly.

Harbaugh is in the third year of a five-year contract.
