KITV 4 expanding 10 p.m. newscast to one hour

Lineup changes in local television news continue, with KITV 4 announcing it will eliminate its late night Seinfeld re-runs to expand its 10 p.m. weeknight newscast to an hour-long show.
KITV, in a news release posted on its Web site, said it will roll out the lengthened newscast tonight. It will be followed by ABC News Nightline at 11 p.m., giving KITV a 90-minute news block.
“Given recent changes in the market, we believe there’s a positive message in expanding our local coverage,” said Mike Rosenberg, KITV president, in the press statement.

The local television news business has undergone massive changes in recent weeks, with a shared services agreement between KGMB, KHNL and KFVE taking effect. KGMB and KHNL combined news operations with most of KHNL’s news staff being let go. Some news shows are simultaneously broadcast on KGMB and KHNL.
KITV said the new one-hour newscast will provide an advantage for the station, giving it more time to explore big issues such as the economy and health care.
KITV had run Seinfeld in the 10:35 p.m. slot. The station said fans will still be able to watch the comedy at 6:30 p.m. weekdays.
